3, Gunn unleashes on audiences the final piece of his full vision, a simultaneously somber and bombastic affair that reveals his master plan: these films are not three singular pieces but parts of a whole. Yet, taken we all were as writer/director James Gunn brought audiences on a space odyssey of outlandish ludicrousness that kicked off one of the best trilogies of the MCU. Say what you will about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but, in the early days, no one expected to be so taken by a collection of assassins, thieves, marauders, and murders brought to live action from the mind behind Tromeo and Juliet (1996) and Slither (2006). (another hint of Murakami’s love of Kafka), is in love with an ex-college friend, Sumire, who in turn is in love with her new boss, Miu, who isn’t in love with anyone, not even her husband, because of a strange event in her life fourteen years ago. ‘Sputnik Sweetheart’, at 220-something pages, falls into the last category and, like most Murakami works, sucks the reader in with a perfect description of the everyday before blind-siding them with something a little more, shall we say, bizarre. As any regular Murakami reader knows, the Japanese author likes to alternate between slightly odd short stories, big mind-boggling novels, and short novels which, in their own way, are just as nutty as the rest of his writing. 5/12/2023 0 Comments Peter willcoxThe recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Guardian, Peter has confronted naval warships, including diving in front of a moving destroyer faced a bombing attack of the iconic 'Rainbow Warrior', resulting in the murder of a shipmate and endured imprisonment for peacefully protesting Russian oil drilling in Antarctica along with his crew. The novel is littered with disjointed blanks that demand filling and the first fifty pages are more of a novella than the opening to a novel. It is, in fact, somewhat of a failure as a narrative. What makes God’s War such an accomplishment has little to do with plot. Of course, her team isn’t the only one looking. Once a government sponsored bel dame (assassin), Nyx has been down her luck for a while when she’s called before the Nasheen Queen to hunt down an alien who might have access to genetic technology that could end the never ending war between Chenja and Nasheen. She’s got an unlucky team around her, headlined by the not so talented magician, Rhys, whose good looks and steady hands make up for his deficiencies. She’s rather good at her job, mostly because she manages to chop off the heads of anyone dumb enough to get in her way. It’s the kind of novel that plants a flag, making a statement about the deficiencies of genre fiction and challenging societal perceptions as a matter of course. God’s War by Kameron Hurley, subsequently nominated for a Nebula Award, was the mother ship of that movement. Beginning with Paolo Bacigalupi’s The Windup Girl three years ago, Night Shade Books has made a concerted effort to produce meaningful debut novels. 5/11/2023 0 Comments Thunder below eugene fluckeyThe first pass wasn’t fast enough for FDR. “He wanted the Barb to reenact her return to Pearl with battle flags flying as he filmed some home movies,” wrote Fluckey in his action-packed memoir, Thunder Below! FDR enjoyed it so much he asked that all of Fluckey’s future patrol reports be sent along to him-and then demanded a bit more. Charles Lockwood, gave it to President Roosevelt, who happened to be at Pearl Harbor on the Barb’s return. Indeed, his report on the patrol was so full of new ideas, so gung ho, positive, and entertaining, that the commander, Adm. But with Fluckey placed in temporary command, the Barb got five freighters and two trawlers with the Barb’s guns its next time out-and Fluckey got the Barb. It was a bold gamble the ship Fluckey had been eyeing, the USS Barb, had sunk only a single ship in six patrols under its previous commander. Eugene Fluckey, seeking his own submarine command, promised the Pacific Fleet sub commander at Midway Island that he would sink five Japanese ships on his first patrol. |
